The Red Devil

kenblair.com and other sites and services here were hosted on the Red Devil from 2002 to 2011. Upon failure of a hard drive in the RAID array in October 2011, it was a good time to retire the server and move the functionality to a hosting company.

The server is named this because that was the name of server's case the when I bought it from www.colorcase.com (which is now defunct) in 1998. I built the Red Devil in 1998 from these components:

- Asus P2B-F motherboard (Note the old-school 16 bit ISA slots):

- Single Intel Pentium III 500 Slot 1 CPU:

Intel Pentium 3 CPU, slot1

- Promise FastTrack TX2 IDE RAID controller

- A pair of Western Digital WS200BB 20 GB hard drives

- 3Com 3c905c-TX network interface

- 1 GB of RAM in four Micron Technology PC100 256 MB DIMMS.

It was a great PC back in the 1998. This is the only machine on the LAN, and it sits behind a Netscreen (now Juniper) 5XP Unlimited firewall.

Both devices are connected to an old Para Systems (makers of Minuteman UPS) rackmount UPS that I pulled out of a dumpster that worked fine after replacing the batteries in it.  How's that for revealing too much information?
